South Fork of the American River

Paul Ratliffe, Photographer

For many years, Paul has owned and operated Sierra Shutterbug, shooting rafters on the South Fork of the American River, but in the 1980s his fascination with whales led him into marine mammal photography. His camera has captured humpbacks, belugas, gray whales, orcas, dolphins, and sea otters. In 2001 he sold Sierra Shutterbug to pursue marine photography full time. Though he is no longer living in the Coloma-Lotus area, many people in the area still consider him a friend and neighbor.

Paul is known worldwide for his marine mammal photographs, which are frequently displayed and published. He also volunteers his time presenting free educational slide shows for schools, organizations, clubs, and events.

Featured here is Paul's poster, "Our Ocean Friends," a compilation of his best marine mammal photographs. You can see more of Paul's work at Ocean Friends Images.
