According to Scott Nakaji, superintendent of the Park Department's Gold Fields District, the park will likely close for at least two years, unless other funding sources are found.

Every year 70,000 school children visit this park to learn about the discovery of gold that led to the 1849 Gold Rush, which resulted in one of the the greatest mass migrations in history. They learn about its effects, both positive and negative, on history, economics, environment, native peoples and culture. Closing the park would cut off this education resource.

Information obtained from Gary Lyons, Marshall Sector Superintendent, puts operational costs for July 2008 through June 2009 at around $729,000, with wages and benefits about 87% of the total cost of operations. Income for the same period was $174,757. The resulting deficient is $554,243. However, it should be pointed out that, even if that is the projected deficit, it does not represent what the state will "save"should the park close. Best guess projections would put operating costs of while in closure status at about $200,000. The resulting deficit — or money "saved" would only be about $350,000/annually — a very small amount given the actual state budget.

Since the publication of pending closure, multiple meetings with park officials and Supervisor Briggs have been held, and a two prong strategy developed. One prong focuses on letter writing campaigns, media attention, with a primary focus on getting the schools and school children that visit the park each year involved. This effort is being spearheaded by Lois Fortress and the Gold Discovery Park Association (GDPA).

The second prong involves the financial aspect, and looks at economic impact to the community, solutions to the deficit, and potential partnerships. The Coloma Lotus Chamber of Commerce (CLCC), Marjorie Sanborn, Chamber President, is leading this endeavor.

Not only is the issue of closure an emotional one — the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill precipitated the Gold Rush and is one California's most defining events — it is an issue of public safety. With MSDSHP divided by Hwy 49, it will be virtually impossible to "close" the park. Visitors will continue to stop, and without monitoring and supervision, the potential safety risk and probable continued deterioration of the park is certainly foreseeable.

What You Can Do
Join in our letter writing campaign, and attend public meetings, the details of which can be found at www.keepsuttersmillopen.org. If you are a local business, when you receive your survey about the potential economic impact to your business, complete it. If you are a Facebook member, please join our cause and share the word with your friends.

Updates
The decision(s) about park closures are expected to be made by Labor Day. Even if the park remains on the list, the battle will not be over. We will continue our campaign, and will continue to develop an economic plan that makes long-term sense.

If you are a Chamber member, you will get email updates. Additionally, if you would like to participate in our Economic Impact sub-committee, please contact the Coloma-Lotus Chamber, or call Marjorie at (541) 622-6919.

The Water is Flowing and Your Shuttle Awaits!

If you are ready for some fun whitewater rafting or kayaking, come to Coloma. On the 3rd Saturday of each month, May through September, come into the historic past through the new Summer Performance Series at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma. Meet some of the colorful and diverse people who set the stage for the powerful and tumultuous history of California.

On May 16th, Rex Ruth portrays Captain John Charles Fremont. He takes you through his military career with passionate stories of the man who organized the first California Volunteer Militia, became one of the State's first Senators, and was appointed Major General in the Union Army during the Civil War. The Cemetery Players bring to life the stories of those who lived, died, and are buried in the cemeteries of Coloma on June 20th. John Sutter, Sam Brannan, and James Marshall share stories on July 18th around an evening bonfire. Kimberly ShiningStar will be at the Grinding Stone on August 15 with Native American history and storytelling. A grand finale September 19 brings characters from the previous performances together for visitors enjoyment. Signs will be posted in the park for the exact location of each performance.

Each event is from 7:30 to 9:00 pm with free parking beginning at 7:00 pm. Tickets may be purchased the evening of the performance or in advance at the Gold Rush Mercantile in the park. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. Please provide your own seating—bring a blanket or lawn chair and pick your spot.

The Gold Discovery Park Association sponsors this event series and all money raised goes to support the educational and interpretive programs in Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. Imagine doing so on a trail dedicated to recreation and the enjoyment of oak woodlands, conifer, chaparral, and the riverside.

That long-held hope is now on its way to being a reality. The final land parcel that completes the 20-mile route (see a PDF map) was sold by a couple who decided to protect its natural habitat for the public to enjoy. Funds that purchased it were provided by the State Wildlife Conservation Board, the State Resources Agency's River Parkways Grant Program, and over 400 private donors. All this, plus the work that had been done on the rest of the trail route, was coordinated by the American River Conservancy (ARC).

The 20-mile trail has been 20 years in the making. Its completion is a source of great excitement for those who have been hoping and working for it since 1989, as well as the many who have come along since then and enjoy the prospect of traveling so far in the richness of nature in their own back yards.

Funds are still needed to bring the trail into reality. The ARC estimates it will cost $175K to complete trail construction and provide a few pedestrian bridges at stream crossings and interpretive signage at the trailheads. The official ribbon cutting is planned for the late spring of 2010. Contributions to the South Fork American River Trail Campaign can be sent to: The American River Conservancy, P.O. Box 562, Coloma, CA. 95613. For further information regarding trail project donations, please contact: David Morrill, ARC Marketing and Development Director at (530) 621-1224.

The completion of the South Fork American River Trail brings an even greater dream closer to reality. With regional coordination, it could become a key segment within a larger regional trail that would span the approximately 50 miles from downtown Sacramento (Sutter’s Fort) to Coloma (Sutter’s Mill). Parcel by parcel, this dream is moving to reality.

January 24: Gold Discovery Day

The 161st anniversary of James Marshall’s momentous discovery of gold in the tailrace of Sutter’s Mill will be celebrated on Saturday, January 24, 2009, from 10 am to 4 pm at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, Highway 49, in Coloma.

The day features a gold discovery re-enactment along the American River, at the very site where James Marshall found gold in 1848. The event will have mill carpenter demonstrations at the saw mill, gold panning, cooking, blacksmithing and Gold Rush period music and entertainment. Gold Rush authors will introduce their writings and sign publications at the museum store. In addition to the Gold Discovery festivities, the museum and visitor center will open at 10 AM.

What's it all about? It's an event that changed the world. It started as a piece of ambitious business: in 1847, John Sutter asked James Marshall to build a sawmill along the banks of the American River. Sutter needed lumber for his expanding agricultural enterprises in California’s Sacramento Valley and Marshall, a carpenter, was looking for a job. Marshall and Sutter chose Coloma as the site for the sawmill. It provided a rushing river for power and a forest of pines for lumber. As the sawmill neared completion in January 1848, it became clear that the tailrace, where the water leaves the mill, needed to be deepened. Marshall’s solution was to use the force of the water itself to scour out a deeper channel.

Then came the extraordinary moment. On the morning of January 24, 1848, James Marshall was standing in a shallow pool of water in the tailrace when he noticed a glimmering rock the size of his fingernail. “Hey boys,” he called out to the workmen around him, “by God, I believe I’ve found a gold mine.” It was a moment that was to change the course of history. It was the start of the California Gold Rush -- with all its excitement, pains, and hopes.

Enjoy this special commemorative day, visit the park that features a Miwok Bark House and a Chinese Store, and see park volunteers and docents in period dress bring the gold discovery to life. Parking on this special day is $7 per car. The Park is open from 8 am to 5 pm, and the Museum is open from 10am to 3pm seven days a week, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. The Park is located on Hwy 49, between Placerville and Auburn, about 1 hour east of Sacramento. The event is sponsored by the Gold Discovery Park Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the interpretation and conservation of Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park.

Christmas in Coloma all Weekend, Dec. 13 & 14!

Come celebrate the Christmas season in an old-fashioned, hands-on, playful way! Both Saturday and Sunday, December 13 and 14, children and adults can enjoy playing games, making holiday wreaths and candles, and buying high quality home-made crafts and products from local and area artisans. This is the place to get your children's photo with Santa!

Food and beverage are available in our lovely historic park in Coloma, and plenty of historically costumed and knowledgeable volunteers will help bring history to life. They even bring snow to the valley for fun! The event runs from 10am - 4pm both days. Parking is $7 for an entire carload. For more information see our Christmas in Coloma Article.

This weekend, a highlight in the park, is run by the Gold Discovery Park Association, the "cooperating association" of the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. GDPA supports a variety of programs for children and adults — as well as projects that help preserve historic buildings and maintain park facilities. All revenue generated by the Gold Discovery Park Association — including those raised at this fun weekend — stays right here to fund the Park's programs and opportunities for visitors. Thanks for your support! You and your friends and family are welcome to come back and enjoy Coloma all year round!

To volunteer at Christmas in Coloma, call John Clagett at (530) 621-2170. Maybe the great year-round climate should be kept a secret, but the news about the fine weather is too good not to pass on. Now that the summer whitewater rafting & kayaking season has peaked, the equipment is tucked into storage and guides head back to college, Costa Rica or other destinations, locals relish what many consider the finest times of the year.

As temperatures cool, the lucky Coloma-Lotus valley residents who remain here, along with savvy campers and RVers, find plenty to do. Hiking, bicycling and other land activities become more attractive. Fall colors peak in October and November, when black oak forests and riverside cottonwoods blaze with orange and yellow. Savvy visitors love this time, often fitting in a visit to the valley with a trip to Apple Hill, local ranches, and wineries — all of which beckon with great savory attractions.

Winter, with its gentle, life-giving rains, is a time for indoor holiday activities, such as Christmas in Coloma, winter winery events, and local business open houses. In January, Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park celebrates the anniversary of the first California gold discovery. See our calendar for more local events.

Any long-time resident of the valley has heard this question from outsiders: "How much snow did you get this year?" and that local resident will give the usual answer: None. Very occasionally the valley will receive several inches of snow, to the delight of local children. However, we're at a surprisingly low elevation — the river is at about 700 to 750 feet above sea level. Even that slight elevation, however, is enough to protect the valley from the dreary tule fog that plagues the Central Valley. So winters here are delightful, typically characterized by winter rains, frosty mornings and localized river mists that dissipate as the sun rises. For more information, forecasts, and links to road conditions, visit our Weather page.

Do come to Coloma-Lotus year-round for gorgeous natural beauty, delectable agricultural and culinary offerings, as well as our arts, history, and culture. Many restaurants, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds and other lodgings are available year-round and generally are uncrowded. The B&Bs are beautifully decorated for the holidays. Expanded to three days this year, Coloma will be full of sights, sounds, scents, and hands-on experiences as costumed volunteers living in a tent encampment and working a recreated mining camp show us history. Merchants hawk their wares, musicians play period instruments and sing songs of the early immigrants, and children play games from the 19th century. For these three days, artists make pictures, tools, and clothes, visitors learn how to pan for gold and make candles and rope, and miners tell tales from the goldfields. On Sunday at 11 a.m., "the Rev. Freedom Hawkins," accompanied by Joan Cook on the historic Emmanuel Church organ, calls all visitors to an 1850s church service. All three days, visitors may rub shoulders with adventurers and historical figures, such as James Marshall, who found the nugget that started the California Gold Rush.

In the beautiful Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park under graceful trees, "Tent Town" will be the site of much of the action. Near the main museum (where there will be food vendors), volunteers in period dress and tents will cook over open fires and demonstrate trades such as spinning, weaving, basket making and more. Wagon rides will be available for hire. And an extra-special feature is free mail service in Tent Town! Folks can write letters (the old-fashioned way) in a General Delivery tent, and mail will be delivered by horse. Experience some of the many cultures that were here at this important time in history through Mexican and Spanish/Californio tents, the Miwok Village, and the Chinese Store museum.

There will be even more fun activity across the street. See a blacksmith at work! John Clagett, Volunteer Coordinator and event organizer, is especially excited about the participation of expert blacksmith and farrier Eron Simmons. Simmons will be demonstrating period blacksmith techniques at the still-functioning Monroe Blacksmith shop on Main Street. Even better, he will be doing so in the character of Pearley Monroe himself! Pearley was a member of the Monroe-Gooch African American family who worked their way out of slavery to become successful and respected in the area. They eventually owned the land that is now the State Park where all these festivities will occur. See "Pearley" on Saturday only!

Also in the park, the historic Thomas and Capini Houses will be open Saturday and Sunday for a special inside look. And for more fun, activity, and history, volunteers all three days will be in the area of Sutter's Mill interpreting the building of the mill, the discovery of gold, and a carpenters' cabin. Even more — right there along the river will be a re-creation of a 1849 mining camp. See it live!

Coloma Gold Rush Live! is presented by Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park and the Gold Discovery Park Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the interpretation and conservation of the Park. Cheer the heroine and hero! Boo and hiss the evil villains! Interact with your actors — who reply in character! Enjoy the rare art of melodrama — it's one of only three such theatres in California! Children under 5' tall sit up front and are a part of the show. Adults enjoy the innuendos that fly over the children's heads!

Five different shows are presented from mid-May through late December. The Olde Coloma Theatre provides audiences with entertaining interactive theatre. It also provides the local community a place and project to focus its energies and resources. All the Theatre's Coloma Crescent Performers are from the local area and are from 5 to over 60 years old. People from all walks of life volunteer at the theatre in all its many jobs, and there's always room for new volunteers.

The autumn show has just started: "Hilda's Haunted Hilltops Halloween Retirement Home ... or ... Remember The Golden Fool." Come see what happens to old Halloween characters who just can't scare anyone any more. Plays are every Friday and Saturday night, with matinees on October 12, 19 & 26. Artistic Director Melynda Tipton, who has been involved with almost every aspect of theatre since she was 14 years old, wrote this new show for the stage. It is a throwback to a Halloween show she wrote two years ago. The same characters in the same home face a new problem. It's fun for those who have seen the earlier show, and for those who are new to the plays.

The winter show is called, "A Coloma Christmas Carol ... or ... Will Someone Get this Lady off the Stage?" by Heather Whittington and Melynda Tipton. It runs every Friday and Saturday night from Nov 21, 2008 - Dec 21, 2008, with matinees on November 30 and December 7, 14 and 21.

All shows are family-friendly and appropriate for all ages. It is interactive theatre — the audience talks with the characters and they answer. For actors, this is some of the most challenging acting because they need to be able to ad lib to the audience. Every show is a little different, adapted for each audience!

Tipton encourages all to come see the shows, and all who are interested to invest some time and energy into the theatre. "If you have a talent, we can find a use for it," she invites. "Anyone with any talent and willingness is welcome to bring it to the Theatre."

Folks are needed to work backstage crew, front concession and ticket help, and as parking attendants, performers, lighting & sound technicians, costume-makers, and cleaning crew. On the artistic side, directors, assistant directors, writers, performers, and musicians (especially piano players) are neeed. Volunteers can commit to an entire run, or help out an evening or two to see the show for free.

High school students can get community service credit working at the theatre, and have a rewarding experience there. Tipton exclaims, "I know so many kids who if they hadn't gotten involved in theatre, would have been out getting stoned and stealing cars." What they and others find at the theatre instead is a sense of community, a sense of fulfillment, and new confidence when in front of an audience. Working on a show behind the stage also provides a tangible end result that is very satisfying. Plus there's great personal connections. "After working a show with people, you feel so much closer with them," says Tipton. "If you work the theatre, you join the family of the Coloma Crescent Players."

So come on out to see a show, enjoy some refreshments including fresh popped corn which you salt yourself, and have fun with live performers. Feel free too to donate items to the theatre — the wish list includes wood for building sets, paint, costume items, and props such as old lanterns, candle holders, old paintings, tea sets, household items, floor area rugs, bolts of material, and much more.

The theatre is a nonprofit entity with 501(c) status, so donations are tax-deductable. All the money made through shows goes straight back into the theatre. Says Tipton, who volunteers 40-60 hours per week for the theatre, "It's the most hard and thrilling work I've ever done. It's a great joy and a great responsibility." Email Melynda Tipton to become part of the drama.

Shows are at the Olde Coloma Theatre, 380 Monument Road, Coloma 95613. Doors open at 7:30pm, curtain rises at 8:00pm. Tickets are $10 general, $9 for ages 55+, and $5 for ages 12 and under. Call for reservations: (530) 626-5282. Visit the Olde Coloma Theatre website for more information. She has drawn, worked in watercolor, and restored Antique Glass for many years and studied with many teachers. Mary Ann then found pastel, and now plein air painting with pastels is her favorite of all mediums. She says, “When I hike into the high country and witness the vistas that capture my breath, I just have to paint them. I want my clients to enjoy the views and places I have traveled to, plus have the feeling that I feel when I'm painting, which is an immense enjoyment of this picturesque country that we live in.”

Michelle Sage Kite - Light-catching Glass Art Mobiles and Kaleidoscopes

Local artist Michelle Sage Kite has taught art in public schools for over 20 years. She is still in pain, but is working hard in physical therapy for overall strengthening and towards her goal of walking again.

Also good news: a DVD is now available of Kelley's adventure documentary: 3 Women, 3 Hundred Miles! This 65-minute documentary chronicles a self support adventure on river boards down the Colorado River, by Kelley Kalafatich, Julie Munger, and Rebecca Rusch. It did well at a Colorado film festival but since then has been shown only to small audiences. Having been fortunate enough to see it a few years ago, I can say it is extremely well done. The adventure is gripping, the people are real and engaging, and the Colorado River and Grand Canyon are awe-inspiring as always. You can order a copy by sending your mailing address, and a minimum donation of $40 to: Sue Norman, PO Box 9423, South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96158. This is a benefit for the Sierra Nevada Alliance. The blooms should be perfect, so come on out to enjoy each other's company in a beautiful place and raise some money for a great cause.

There will be two walk options. The easier walk will be less than a mile long and will involve about 200 feet of vertical ascent. The harder walk will be about two miles long and will go down to the river and back, which is about 1000 feet of vertical. Both walks are on narrow trails. The views from both walks are spectacular! All you need is hiking boots, walking clothes, sunscreen and a water bottle. Camera, binoculars, etc. are optional. NOTE: The walk will go off rain or shine, so bring your rain gear!

The walk is open to the first 50 people who respond - any and all ages are welcome and encouraged! Feel free to invite friends. However, please leave pets at home for this one.

The suggested donation is $40/person, kids 12 and under free. Directions to the Coloma location will be provided upon RSVP.

Please reply to Kay@sierranevadaalliance.org.

Thanks to Mark Leder-Adams for letting us use his photograph of poppies above Third Threat on the South Fork of the American River.

Cowboy Hay featured on NPR

National Public Radio's Morning Edition for Friday, March 7, focused on "virtues classes," where parents of different faiths bring their children together to learn about universal values such as kindness and helpfulness.

We were enjoying the engaging story when a familiar name came up:
"The children have been so patient for more than an hour, waiting for the highlight of the class, Cowboy Hay. Sutter needed lumber for his expanding agricultural enterprises in the Sacramento Valley and Marshall, a carpenter, was looking for a job. Marshall and Sutter chose Coloma as the site for the sawmill because of the rushing river for power and a forest of pines for lumber. As the sawmill neared completion in January 1848, James Marshall contemplated its efficiency and made adjustments. Checking his project on the morning of January 24, 1848, James Marshall reached into shallow water at the side of the tailrace. He scooped up a handful of sand, gravel, mud... and a few flakes of golden metal. "Hey boys," he lifted his voice to workmen around him, "by God, I believe I've found a gold mine." It was a moment that was to change the course of history.

Gold Discovery Day will feature a gold discovery reenactment on the banks of the American River. Other activities include mill carpenter demonstrations, a Miwok Village, free wagon rides to Marshall's Cabin, gold panning, and Gold Rush period music and entertainment. Gold Rush authors introduce their writings and sign publications at the museum store. The public is invited to all these activities, free of charge. There is a $7 per car parking fee at the State Park.

California State Parks and Gold Discovery Park Association — a nonprofit organization dedicated to the interpretation and conservation of Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park — sponsor Gold Discovery Day. Park volunteers and docents in period dress bring the event to life. Hospitalized since, she is undergoing intensive physical therapy in hopes of recovering some mobility. Kelley is a graduate of El Dorado High School, and became a river guide soon after. Her outdoorswoman and river guide skills have gained her employment in Arizona, Alaska, South America, Central America and Africa. She was the stunt double for Meryl Streep in the film "The River Wild," and co-produced her own film, "Three women, Three Hundred Miles." Her phenomenal worldly accomplishments are surpassed only by her gracious humility, generosity, kindness, and loyalty to friends. After release from the hospital she will reside in Fair Oaks with her boyfriend Kurt, and her furry four-legged friend Wilbur.

There was a fundraiser for Kelley on Sunday, December 9. Event Planners were pleasantly overwhelmed by 225 people who attended a dinner and auction hosted by the Sierra Nevada House. Special thanks go to Howard Penn, who donated the dinner, the staff, and the facility. A longtime friend of Kelley's, Howard made friends of everyone by serving celebratory shots to all the volunteers at the end of the night, a more generous host I've never met. The Event Chairperson, Janice Stanley, did an outstanding job orchestrating over 30 volunteers and 75 product donors in just 3 weeks to make this event successful. Thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors, donors, and attendees who stepped up; the list of supporters is too long to recount here! Kelley has clearly touched many people's lives, I'm certain she feels grateful for each and every act of generosity. Our community is lucky to have her, many people who attended the event who didn't even know Kelley. Yet we all left with a warm sense of security having seen our community take action when the need arises.

To check for updates on Kelley's condition go to www.checkonkk.blogspot.com.

Christmas In Coloma, December 8 & 9

Step back in time with this annual old-fashioned Christmas. A circular staircase climbs to the the Grand Ballroom, and at the top is the "widow's walk", offering panoramic views of the Sacramento Valley, Sierra foothills, and nearby towns. In 1978 the Old Bayley House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Friends of the Bayley House in Pilot Hill are raising money for the Bayley House Restoration Project by selling old bricks that were made on-site in 1862. They are laser engraved with the words "Bayley House" and all of the proceeds go directly towards meeting their non-profit's goal of raising $100,000. The bricks are very attractive, can be purchased for a minimum donation of $25, and should be available for purchase by November 12. Go to http://www.bayleyhouse.net/ for more details about the restoration, or to purchase bricks.

Coloma Gold Rush Live Draws over 1,000 Visitors!

On October 13 and 14 COLOMA GOLD RUSH LIVE took place at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. On Sunday at 11 am "the Rev.

In the beautiful Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park under graceful trees, “Tent Town” will be the site of much of the action. Experience some of the many cultures that were here at this important time in history thorugh Mexican and Spanish/Californio tents, the Miwok Village, and the Chinese Store museum.

There will be even more fun activity across the street. See a blacksmith at work! John Clagett, Volunteer Coordinator and event organizer, is especially excited about the participation of expert blacksmith and ferrier Eron Simmons. Simmons will be demonstrating period blacksmith techniques at the still-functioning Monroe Blacksmith shop on Main Street. Even better, he will be doing so in the character of Pearley Monroe himself! Pearley was a member of the [http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1139] Monroe-Gooch African American family that worked their way out of slavery to become successful and respected in the area. They eventually owned the land that is now the State Park where all these festivities will occur. See “Pearley” on Saturday only!

Also in the park, the historic Thomas and Capini Houses will be open Saturday and Sunday for a special inside look. And for more fun, activity, and history, volunteers all three days will be in the area of Sutter's Mill interpreting the building of the mill, the discovery of gold, and a carpenters’ cabin. Even more - right there along the river will be a re-creation of a 1849 mining camp. See it live!

Coloma Gold Rush Live! is presented by Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park and the Gold Discovery Park Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the interpretation and conservation of the Park. Parking and entry fee is only $8 per carload, covering everyone in the car. Times are 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday, and 10am-3pm on Monday. For more information call 530.295.2162. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is located in Coloma on Highway 49 between Placerville and Auburn.

Special note: Experienced volunteers are still needed, in the Gold Panning,
Hospitality, and Information Booth areas. If you have experience and want to help, please contact John Clagett at (530) 295-2170.

For more information; click on http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=484 .
