South Fork of the American River

About the Coloma Valley

Recreation, Vacations and a Great Place to Live

Swimmer's Rapid on the South Fork of the American RIver History. Whitewater thrills. Beauty and serenity. An easygoing climate. Friendly folks. All of that is here -- and more.

Visitors come for the great rafting and kayaking that the clear, swift waters of the South Fork of the American River offer. The stretch of river between Chili Bar and Folsom Reservoir is one of the most popular whitewater rafting destinations in the United States, attracting more than 80,000 thrill seekers every year. Many folks come here for the camping and fishing opportunities; hundreds of campsites, many of them on the river's edge, beckon RVers and tent campers alike. Historic churches and gracious settings for receptions attract couples looking for casual or elegant wedding venues. Here, too, are tree-ripened fruit, home-grown olive oil and family-crafted wines catering to a contemporary, discerning clientele.

Many of these visitors choose to make the valley their home, finding that the beauty of the valley, easygoing climate and wholesome surroundings make for a perfect lifestyle. Young families enjoy great schools, and retirees come for the easygoing lifestyles and amenities right here in the valley or within close driving distance.

The valley is a place to enjoy year-round. Summer is a time for cooling off in the river. Fall brings the harvest and spectacular yellow and gold foliage. Winter is a time of gentle rains (snow seldom falls here because of the low elevation), and spring boasts mild temperatures, green hills and lavish displays of poppies, lupines and other wildflowers.
